Duck season is near!

Fall is in the air here in Southeastern Oklahoma. With the unusually heavy rains the ponds are filled to the brim, and we're in great shape relative to vegetation. The Oklahoma wildlife department is forecasting a great duck season. Read more at http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/storyofweek2.htm. In the mean time we're making final preparations for opening day of duck season. The new Final Approach blinds should be in this week and our decoy inventory is at an all time high!

Separately, deer season (primitive firearms, aka muzzleloading) started this past weekend. The rut hasn't started yet and we've had cold and rainy weather. Despite this, sightings of 2 and 3 bucks per day were not uncommon for those of us out in the field. It should do nothing but get better from here...

Hopefully your fall is off to a great start. Drop us a line when you get a chance and let us know how your hunting season is going so far, and don't forget now is the time to book that duck hunt!

Take care,
Ben

Diamond Bar Sporting is Gearing Up

Check out our new fishing boats. We have already gotten some good use out of them; they definitely get the job done.

Storm on the Ranch

Here are some pictures of the storm I talked about in my previous post...it was wild.

The weathers is absolutely beautiful here in God's country this October 1st. Cool mornings and warm afternoons is what it is all about. Been feeding cattle every morning. Hoping to have everything weighed and shipped within the next month. Lakes are full as we have had a couple of serious storms in the last ten days. Got some great photographs and video of one just yesterday. Waylon and I were greasing and oiling our grain drill for our food plots when all the sudden the sky got pitch black. Earlier in the day we were shooting a promo video for our Carolina twin troller 2man bass boats that we use in our guided fishing and are dealers of so luckily we had some video equipment on hand.

The storm dropped 3/4 in. rain in about 15 minutes and then the sun came right back out. Unfortunately our food plots are going to be to muddy to do anything with for at least a few more days. We are behind the 8 ball. The good news is there is some volunteer from last years stand that should buy us enough time until we get proper weather.

On the bright side i have deployed a portable stand I built with materials provided by my dad Steve and a few self feeders. Been a slow go with the feeders but a good friend of mine suggested putting out salt blocks to help attract the deer to the feeders. "They don't have to have corn but salt is a necessity." After Waylon and I put out the salt blocks there has been a rapid response by the deer. Best of all salt blocks are cheap and low maintenance. ($3.50 for a 50 lb. block at tractor supply)

Things are perking up on the waterfowl front as well as the cool weather approaches. On my brother's new pond been seeing anywhere from 30-50 birds every morning when I've been feeding. Also a friend of mine from Ada is going to be bringing out some guys who have some field trials with their dogs coming up. Real excited to be training their dogs with them.

Labor Day Means Labor

Hopefully everyone is enjoying their Labor Day Weekend. At Diamond Bar Sporting, Labor Day means Labor! We spent the first part of the weekend planting Japanese Millet and other assorted duck friendly feeds around the shoreline of our top lakes. Along the way young Alex managed to shoot his first cotton mouth. The matrons of Diamond Bar Sporting reacted better to this news than I would have expected.

We have also gotten started on our traditional winter wheat project, which has proven to be just as attractive to the geese as it is deer. We've actually had geese around for most of the summer this year, which is a first for us as far as I know.

Hopefully you all are enjoying your Labor Day Weekend. To be honest, it wasn't all work for us. We did manage to sneak in some rest and relaxation. Last but not least, let me expresss a special thanks to Terry Dupree from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for his helpful advice this year.

PS - Waterfowl season dates have been set for Oklahoma. Here at Diamond Bar Sporting (Oklahoma Zone 2), the duck season will run Nov. 7-29 and then start back up Dec. 12 and go through Jan. 31.

OK / TX Duck Hunting

Just got back from the Texas Trophy Hunters show in Fort Worth where Diamond Bar Sporting and Heavybilt Mfg are exhibiting. It is always encouraging for me to see how many people are involved, or at least interested in hunting and the outdoors. It is a way of life we shouldn't take for granted, and it's absolutely vital that the younger generations be involved in order to perpetuate.

What I did notice this year was how few outfitters focus on duck hunting. Obviously most offer deer hunting. After all, this is where the big bucks (pun intended) are. And several did seem to offer good goose hunting. But very little duck hunting! Then it dawned on me -- most don't have first rate duck hunting because of the water, or lackthereof in west texas. Sure they are in the fly way, but without large bodies of water it's hard to have the volume of ducks needed for "limit out" hunting.

We're fortunate here at the Diamond Bar to have over 200 acres of water, with multiple bodies of 20+ acres. I absolutely can't wait till November 1st when season opens here in Southeastern Oklahoma (and all of Texas). We've some new special widgeon decoys on order to make the fall hunts all the better - they're hard to find for those of you that have never tried.

Hopefully everyone has a great weekend - take care.

Ben
